English Lessons in Sydney

The English language is one of the happiest languages in the world, according to a study carried out by Vermont University. They studied lyrics, subtitles, tweets and other pieces of discourse and discovered that positive words like “happy” or “smile” are used 3 times more often than terms associated with negative feelings like “sad” or “disappointed”. Embrace this positivity and start learning English in Sydney with us at Listen & Learn. Our native-speaking instructors will prepare a personalised programme for you to learn at your own pace and in your own time.

Plus, we can prepare the lessons around any materials of your choosing. From top films or books to classic or contemporary songs in English, you can learn the language using any media you enjoy and improve your listening skills and perception of the Australian accent. Want to have some fun with musicals, like The Sapphires, and sing along to their lively songs? We can help. Are you a horror-movie fan and would like to explore Australian productions? We can plan a course around films like The Tunnel, too.

And if you are looking to socialise in Sydney, you’ll find that knowing English is an asset as 90% of the city’s residents speak it. One of the best ways to practise and meet new people is to join one of the many language exchange groups, such as Let’s Talk in English.

Reach out to us today and our professional tutors will help you achieve fluency and to read classics like CloudStreet by Tim Winton without any help!

The type of courses we offer:

Face-to-Face 1-to-1 (Individual) General English

These English lessons fit a broader spectrum and can be useful for those who need different things from the language. Most beginner students will have a handle of survival English by the end of their lesson, which will provide them with enough English to communicate at least at a basic level during short trips to the country, but those who require more would benefit greatly from these sessions. Typical students have been those eager to travel all over the world, those buying overseas property, those with foreign spouses, aficionados of English culture and those who just wish to pass a particular English exam. Face-to-Face 1-to-1 (Individual) Business English

These English Lessons are intended for people who really need to learn English to help make that difference in their work. For beginners, it will be useful to learn greetings and basic business etiquette; at higher levels, reading and then writing become more important. Typical students include those involved in import/export, international negotiations and acquisitions, jobseekers in multinational companies where an additional language is required, and those working with international colleagues, academia and government. Even in our most basic lesson for Beginners, students should expect to end the lesson with basic telephone English and English e-mail skills for communication as well as survival English required for short visits to a country. California Dreaming- The Mamas and the Papas

California Dreaming is a popular American song from the 1960s you can use to take your listening skills and English vocabulary to the next level, especially if you are a beginner. For example, you will learn vocabulary about the weather and the seasons (“cold winter’s day”, “scorching hot”, “windy”) and colours (brown, grey, red), as the poetic persona expresses his longing for the warmth of California’s weather. Also, the singer pronounces very clearly and the song is relatively slow-paced, making it a great resource to practise your listening comprehension skills and even sing along to via karaoke!
