English Lessons in Perth

People from all around the globe decide to move to Perth every year, and as a result, 43% of its population is made up of foreign-born residents. If you happen to be one of them and are finding it hard to adapt to the local language, the best thing you could do to dramatically improve your experience in the city is to become a proficient English speaker. There are many ways you could do that, like joining a local language club, taking some of the free beginner English lessons provided by the government, or looking for your own materials at the local library. You could also start an English language course in Perth, which would give you the help and motivation you need to become a fluent speaker as fast as possible` and finally feel like you can communicate clearly. Whether you choose one of these options or a combination of all four, developing your English skills is key to connecting with other residents, 73% of whom speak only English and accessing better jobs that allow you to live the life you always dreamed of in Perth.

Why Study English in Perth?

Learn English for Work and Travel

The faster you start working on your English, the sooner you’ll be eligible for the jobs you’ve always wanted to apply for. This is especially true if you intend to get a job in one of the largest economic sectors in Perth, such as mining, finance or technical services since most companies in those areas are always looking for people in the foreign-born community who can speak other languages in addition to English to help them improve their business relationships with international companies, and also to attract more clients in the local immigrant community. On top of that, learning English is essential if you’re planning on starting any kind of business in the city, since this will allow you to connect with most residents in Perth, regardless of the country they were born in, and allow you to find potential business partners and qualified employees outside your own community.

Learn English for Social

If you become a proficient speaker, you’ll be able to truly appreciate the amazing cultural events Perth has to offer. One that you might be interested in if you’re a cinephile is the annual Perth International Film Festival, held in July. This festival has the reputation of being the biggest celebration of independent films in the country and since 1997 it continues to impress local audiences with some of the best Australian and International films. Although every year there are more than 200 films you can watch, all of them are either in English or subtitled in English, so unless you work on your language skills, you’ll only be able to watch the few ones you can find in your native language. Improving your English will also allow you to understand the wonderful talks and Q&As at the festival, which provide the unique opportunity for you to meet amazing filmmakers and actors from all around the world, and take part in the many special events around the city which include performances and screenings of shorts, animated films and documentaries. If you want to attend this festival, check out this year’s programme at their website, where you’ll find all the information you need regarding the dates, venues and pricing.

Learn English for Culture

Whether you’re new in the city or you just want to meet new friends who can help you with your English, the Friendship Friday group is exactly what you need. This friendly group of people gather every Friday at 10 am at a local mall called Daniella Plaza, located at 68 Waverley Street to socialise, enjoy a cup of tea and practise their English. You can attend even if you struggle to communicate fluently, as you’ll find that this group will make you feel comfortable very quickly and the organisers, who are native English speakers, will give you useful tips to improve your conversational skills. What’s more, the event is completely free and needs no registration, so there’s no excuse for you to miss it!

Another great group of English learners that you should consider is Language Connects People. If you’re interested in knowing more about Australian culture and you want to meet other immigrants or international students in the city who are trying to improve their English skills, this group is perfect for you. They meet on Wednesdays at 6 pm at the Perth Baptist Church at 10 James Street, only five minutes away from the Perth Train Station, to have meals, chat and then learn English together. They provide a safe, warm environment for you to enjoy stimulating conversations with your new language partners, so if you are up for some practising, don’t forget to attend next week.

Where to learn English in and around Perth?

Now that you know why it’s so important for you to learn to communicate fluently in English, you’re probably wondering what’s the best place to do it. The State Library of West Australia, which is part of the Perth Cultural Centre located at 25 Francis Street, has a great Community Language Section with many English course books at all levels you can use on your own or with the help of a teacher, such as English for Everyone by Victoria Boobyer and Focus On English by Rex Sadler. On top of these useful resources, the library also offers free English conversation sessions for adults, where you’ll be taught Australian expressions that will come in handy for your day-to-day life and meet other people in a similar situation who will help you stay motivated to learn the language. However, if you really want to achieve fluency quickly, your best option in Perth is to study at Listen & Learn. California Dreaming- The Mamas and the Papas

California Dreaming is a popular American song from the 1960s you can use to take your listening skills and English vocabulary to the next level, especially if you are a beginner. For example, you will learn vocabulary about the weather and the seasons (“cold winter’s day”, “scorching hot”, “windy”) and colours (brown, grey, red), as the poetic persona expresses his longing for the warmth of California’s weather. Also, the singer pronounces very clearly and the song is relatively slow-paced, making it a great resource to practise your listening comprehension skills and even sing along to via karaoke! Do you like electropop and want to take your English skills to the next level while you enjoy great music? Then, Dua Lipa’s songs are great choices! This song, in particular, is about all the rules the singer sets to get over her ex-boyfriends and her determination to never look back. This track is good to learn more about the negative imperative and its informal variations, as the singer uses slang, like “ain’t” or “’em”.
