English in Brisbane

Brisbane, Australia’s third-largest city, is famous for being a vibrant place to live, with many professional opportunities, a lively nightlife, world-class universities, and the possibility of meeting people from all around the world. For this to be possible, however, English fluency is essential. While Australia doesn’t have an official language, English has been the de facto one since the European settlement. Thus, if you want to fully adapt to your new home and make the most out of what Brisbane has to offer, you should start learning English today!

If you are looking for new employment opportunities, you’ll be happy to know that Brisbane is one of the fastest-growing cities in Australia in terms of economy. As companies like Accenture or EY expand, their need for a qualified workforce that speaks perfect English also grows. Moreover, fluency in English is a must if you plan to study at reputable institutions like the University of Queens. To enrol in one of their programmes, you’ll need to show you master the English language by passing an exam like TOEFL or IELTS. Contact us at Listen & Learn and we will help you prepare for these challenging tests regardless of your age or level.

And if you are looking for opportunities to practise your English skills outside the classroom, why not join one of the many language exchange groups around Brisbane? The Language Exchange Hub, for example, organises weekly meetings to go have dinner while chatting in different languages, such as English. Take part in their events and make new friends while gaining confidence in English!

Are you ready to start your English journey in Brisbane? Contact us today and our expert tutors will start planning a customised programme for you to become fluent in English in the shortest time!

California Dreaming- The Mamas and the Papas

California Dreaming is a popular American song from the 1960s you can use to take your listening skills and English vocabulary to the next level, especially if you are a beginner. For example, you will learn vocabulary about the weather and the seasons (“cold winter’s day”, “scorching hot”, “windy”) and colours (brown, grey, red), as the poetic persona expresses his longing for the warmth of California’s weather. Also, the singer pronounces very clearly and the song is relatively slow-paced, making it a great resource to practise your listening comprehension skills and even sing along to via karaoke! New Rules -Dua Lipa

Do you like electropop and want to take your English skills to the next level while you enjoy great music? Then, Dua Lipa’s songs are great choices! This song, in particular, is about all the rules the singer sets to get over her ex-boyfriends and her determination to never look back. This track is good to learn more about the negative imperative and its informal variations, as the singer uses slang, like “ain’t” or “’em”.
